In this tutorial, I will discuss how to improve WordPress speed without having to spend any money. To do so, you only need two tools, the W3 Total Cache plugin and the free CDN service CloudFlare.

W3 Total Cache In Increasing WordPress Speed

In addition to choosing the quality of a hosting service, the two most important things to improve the speed of a WordPress site are:

  • A plugin caching
  • A content delivery network (CDN)

W3 Total Cache provides a caching feature. Caching increases the speed of your website by providing static files in lieu of dynamic content (where WordPress has a fair amount of dynamic content). Perhaps this is rarely discussed by website owners, but this is very influential in improving the speed of a website. Especially for CMS users of WordPress.

CloudFlare increases your WordPress speed in other ways: content delivery optimization or content delivery optimization. Without a CDN, visitors to your blog should download website content from one server location only.

Even though your website visitors are in Japan, while your website server is in the US, the content will still be downloaded from one US location. The existence of a CDN service can make content from your website disseminated throughout the data center owned by the CDN service used, in this case, CloudFlare.

So this allows visitors to your website can download content from websites that you have from the data center closest to the location they are. So this will reduce the loading time of a website when accessed, because of the closer the data center, the faster the data transmission time.

Using W3 Total Cache and CloudFlare together can enable your website to be accessed several times faster. This is one way that can be used to improve WordPress speed.

How to setup and configure the W3 Total Cache plugin

Most of the WordPress plugins, you do not need advanced settings once activated. Unlike the W3 Total Cache plugin, after the plugin is installed and activated, you have to do some settings.

There are 13 different menus, and this is only in the General Settings section only, not to mention in other parts. But, your fatigue will be paid with the results obtained.

Step 1: Install and activate the Total Cache W3 plugin

Start by installing and activating the Total Cache W3 plugin. This is a free plugin available in the wordpress.org directory so you can install it directly through the WordPress Admin dashboard. Please, select Plugins menu > Add New and type in column search W3 Total Cache.

Please click the Install Now button, and after the installation process is finished make sure to enable it. Then, go to the configuration options by selecting the Performance tab.

Step 2: Configure General Settings

1. General

The first option allows you to automatically activate every feature of W3 Total Cache. Unfortunately, you do not need any of these features, so you do not need to use that option.

It also allows Active mode preview. In Preview mode, you can test changes before activating it. Personally, I advise not to use Preview mode.

2. Page Cache – ENABLE

This is an important feature of W3 Total Cache. Page Cache will improve the performance of your site.
Please select Enable on Page Cache. Also in the Page Cache Method section please select Disk: Enhanced.

3. Minify – Disable

Minify will simplify the code of your website without losing its function. Of course, you need to do your minify code to reduce the loading time. But CloudFlare also has a minification feature. So we further recommend using the minify feature of CloudFlare.

Therefore, please not to enable Minify in W3 Total Cache, if you want to follow the appropriate tutorial steps in this paper and will use CloudFlare.

4. Cache Database – Disable

A database is a place where data from posting, page and website data in the store. Database Cache can improve performance and reduce time when the database sends data to posts, pages, and RSS feeds.

But if you are using shared hosting, database caching can slow down your website because it increases the CPU workload of your server.

So, if you are using shared hosting, we recommend disabling Database Cache. Meanwhile, if you use a dedicated server or VPS, you can enable it by checking it.

5. Object Cache – Enable

Object Cache is another feature that may not be good enough to run on shared hosting. But maybe there is no harm to try first, if your WordPress admin dashboard runs slowly, please to disable it.

But for a while, you can activate it and in the Object Cache Method select Disk.

6. Browser Cache – Enable

Browser Cache increases the speed of your website by caching static resources through the browser of your visitors. By reducing download static content. Please select Enable.

7. CDN – Disable

Since you will be using CDN (CloudFlare), this option is not enabled. Please do not tick it. No need to worry, we’ll explain how to set it to CloudFlare later.

8. Reverse Proxy – Disable

Reverse proxies are advanced features that generally require private hosting. So you do not need to activate it.

9. Monitoring

You do not need to configure Monitoring. Please pass it to the next option.

10. Debug – Disabled

For this option please not to tick it and proceed to the next configuration.

That’s the step of configuring General Settings. There are still other options besides those described above, but you can skip it.

Next, you need to configure each advanced feature. Please select each setting on the right.
Remember – you just need to configure the options you enable above. So you do not need to configure for all menus.

Step 4: Configure the page cache

First, please open Page Cache. Then, go to some options as per the instructions below.

1. General

In the General section, make sure you check:

  • Cache front page
  • Cache feeds
  • SSL Cache – CloudFlare offers free SSL certificates so you can check if your website does not currently use SSL.
  • Don’tcache pages for logged in users

Also please not to check.

2. Preload Cache

Please fill in the settings section below:

Automatically prime the page cache: tick
Update interval: 900
Pages per interval: 10
URL Sitemap: The URL of your website sitemap, usually a namadomain.com/sitemap.xml
Preload the post cache upon publishing events: tick

Step 5: Configure the cache object

Because Minify or Database Cache does not have to be enabled, you can pass it directly to the Object Cache settings section.

You must enable it by default, just make sure the number is as follows:

Default lifetime of cache objects: 180
Garbage collection interval: 3600

Step 6: Configure the browser cache

This is the last setting you need to configure.

General

At the bottom, General option, you need to tick some options. Be sure to check the following sections:

  • Set Last-Modified header
  • expires header
  • cache control header
  • entity tag (eTag)
  • W3 Total Cache header
  • Enable HTTP (gzip) compression

In addition to the above options please not to tick it.
